A sun-kissed tomato, also in winter

07 Aug 2018

The times when consumers could only purchase and prepare seasonal fruit and vegetables have passed. Nowadays, most items are available throughout the year. But where do the strawberries in winter come from? And the runner beans that are currently on display? Origin influences taste, quality and sustainability.

Seasonal Fruit and Vegetables…Is That Still True?

‘Eat what is in season!’ is often promoted, but is it applicable to all types of fruit and vegetables? Even though there are still genuine seasonal products – think of (white) asparagus in spring, artichokes in summer, special mushrooms in autumn and salsify in winter – most fruit and vegetables are available throughout the year. Raspberries during Christmas dinner? No problem! Brussels sprouts in summer? They are still on display.

The Origin of Fruit and Vegetables in Our Stores

To present an attractive display throughout the year, retailers fetch their products from anywhere in the world. Runner beans from Britain but also from Kenya. Apples from Southern England or from Chili? Still, you do not have to look that far, even in winter. Our vine tomatoes are produced under the same conditions all year. The optimal climate in our closed greenhouse complex guarantees a constant quality. And offers consumers the chance to enjoy a fresh tomato salad in summer as well as a warming oven dish in winter.
