Snacking selection further expanded

In a world where everything is available on demand, eating when you feel like it seems a logic step. In the past five years, the snacking selection has rapidly expanded. Earlier, consumers were limited to chocolate bars, biscuits, muesli bars or an apple, whereas today, they can choose from fresh juices, smoothies, sushi and various fruit and vegetable snacks. And German research shows that especially these last options are a popular choice.

Why are snacking tomatoes so popular?

In the Netherlands, snacking tomatoes have been around for a while, but our neighbouring countries are also finding their way to fruit and vegetable snacks. In this segment, the options are increasing too. From snacking tomatoes, cucumbers and radishes to pre-cut fresh fruit salads and mixed berries. Adding to their popularity are the attractive price – which counts for tomatoes in particular – and packaging; smart cups for on the road and practical buckets to take home.

Snacking: a convenience or emotional issue?

Snacking is driven by convenience as well as emotion. Convenience is about functionality – quickly satisfying cravings while on the go – and emotion is about the social aspect – sitting in front of the television with family or at a party with friends. On both occasions, consumers increasingly choose healthy snack options. This offers great possibilities for the future! More about that later.
