Prominent members producing more sustainably by purchasing liquid CO2

07 Jul 2016

Growers of Prominent vine tomatoes are now buying liquid CO2 bearing the Green Origin label: sustainably produced CO2 from a gas supplier in the Botlek - a port and industrial area in Rotterdam. This sustainable solution means that the growers have another source of CO2 when there is no demand for electricity from a cogeneration plant or there is no need for generating heat from their boilers.

The origins of liquid CO2

Liquid CO2 is a by-product released during hydrogen production at Air Liquide, a leader in gases for industry and health care located in Rozenburg, The Netherlands. The liquid CO2 supplied by Air Liquide bears the Green Origin label issued by an independent organisation by the name of Vinçotte. With this label, customers – and Prominent as well – are assured that no direct CO2 emissions have resulted from the energy consumption involved in the production, processing (purification, pressurising and filling procedures) and transport of this product. For this reason, liquid CO2 can be considered a sustainably produced product.

Delivery to Prominent's growers

Tanks of liquid CO2 have already been delivered to 15 Prominent growers. Another nine will receive deliveries from now until the end of October. As soon as the tanks fall below a minimum weight, Air Liquide automatically tops them up. By making use of sustainably produced liquid CO2, the Prominent growers are making an even greater contribution to the sustainable cultivation of vine tomatoes.
